ODORHEIU SECUIESC - We publish hyperlocal content for the readers on Odorheiu Secuiesc, Romania. By the project we would like to broaden our geographical coverage focusing on the larger area of Odorheiu Secuiesc and build a new direct distribution channel, a newsletter.
Creating a newsletter program is a great way to secure another distribution channel for the original content created by our editorial team. Nowadays, almost 80% of the visitors come from social media platforms, and we would like to raise the number of direct visitors, by creating a great newsletter. This way we can secure another channel of content distribution, in order to lower the effect of the social media algorithms. The aim of the project is to create another product for our readers, a product which can be successful only if it provides great content. Producing better content will take hiring a new journalist with experience for the team. By this new hire we will be able to cover a bigger geographical area, but still focusing on the local content.
Target group
The community of the Odorheiu Secuiesc region will benefit from this project, as the Hungarian speaking minority of Romania. Thanks to this project, which allows us to add an extra member to the team with experience in investigative journalism, we will be able to cover a bigger geographical area, not only our hometown, but the smaller surrounding settlements in a range of 50 km.
The content produced will be offered first through the newsletter, with exclusive preview, and in a couple of days it will appear on our portal. In the sea of politically owned media we are one of the few islands left who try to float. Indirectly we will raise the number of members of uh.ro. By strengthening the membership program we assure also the independence of our outlet
Goals of the project
Produce better content for our readers by hiring a new journalist, which has the capacity to cover a broader geographical area. Build a new direct distribution channel to preserve the audience even in the case of social media algorithm changes.
Implemented activities
They built a quite successful weekly newsletter and managed to hire a journalist for more content production capacities
Impact addressing news deserts
Independent local newsrooms are rare birds in the Hungarian-speaking community. The funding helped to secure the independence they need to stand on more legs, if one of them fails that should not mean the end of the newspaper.
