UTRECHT / PRAGUE / WEINSTADT – All over Europe the access to affordable housing is shaking. Over the last ten years prices of houses have increased with 48% on average in the EU, and the number of homeless people have risen to an estimated 1.3 million people.

The ‘homelessness crisis’ is a human rights crisis; homelessness is the most extreme violation of housing as a human right.

The European Union aims to end homelessness by 2030. Member states have adopted this in their national policies (for example the Netherlands). However, with rising numbers and an increasing diversity of homelessness, this resolution seems far removed from reality.

In different countries initiatives have risen that could contribute to end and prevent homelessness. Our team of journalists in The Netherlands, Germany and Czech Republic have immersed themselves in the broad social field of homelessness; including homeless people themselves, experts and advocates and politicians and scholars.

We research how the following can bring solutions closer:

  1. The inclusive ETHOS counting; which shows a diverse and growing group of homelessness;
  2. The unconditional idea of Housing First, which is a successful method to solve or prevent homelessness;
  3. The empowerment of (former) homeless people.
