FIRENZE - The second edition of the Magma Environmental Reporting Fellowship is happening! Applications were accepted until 31 August 2025.

The fellowship took place online from October 2025 to April 2026.

Nine early-career journalists based in southern Europe were selected to participate in this hands-on programme which aimsed to improve their environmental reporting and narrative writing skills while expanding their portfolios.

The Magma Environmental Reporting Fellowship was an incredible opportunity to join an inspiring community of journalists, all dedicated to telling illuminating stories about the Mediterranean in hopes of a just, livable future for the region. I gained confidence in my reporting, writing, and pitching skills, and I’m ever grateful for the thought and care my mentor and the entire Magma team put into helping me elevate my stories.

The fellows followed the principles of science journalism, international reporting, and collaborative journalism. They also had a small travel grant for their reporting.

Participants worked in three small groups based on their interests. Each group had a mentor, and received mentoring and editorial guidance as they worked on environmental issues and solutions in the Mediterranean region.

By the end of the programme, each team produced a contribution to a digital edition of Magma Magazine. Their work was published by Magma, Mongabay, Grist, Imagine5, Euronews, Lucy Sui Mondi, and the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists.

All the fellows were able to expand their network and deepen their understanding of freelance journalism.

The Magma Environmental Reporting Fellowship was a fantastic chance to connect with other ambitious journalists in Europe. The colleagues I met through the program have helped me think differently about what climate change and environmental loss means in this fascinating and fast-changing region. The fellowship also gave me the opportunity to explore stories I was passionate about, and wouldn’t have had a chance to develop otherwise.
