BRUSSELS – The Microgrants for Small Newsrooms project is supporting 25 small local media outlets. These outlets aim to implement new tactics and skills to build resilience and viability. This grant scheme is operated by Journalismfund Europe and Transitions, and co-funded by the European Commission, Vereniging Veronica and Limelight Foundations.

The 25 media outlets are from Albania (1), Austria (1), Croatia (2), Czechia (1), France (1), Hungary (3), Italy (3), Portugal (2), Romania (3), Serbia (2), Slovenia (1), Spain (2) and Ukraine (2). The total amount distributed among the 25 proposals was €122,128.

The jury selected the aforementioned projects for their collaborative approach to problem solving and innovation. These were very important aspects that the jury board considered when choosing the winners. Apart from that, the jury valued their ability to demonstrate adherence to core journalism principles: fact-based, accurate, independent, fair, impartial, and accountable.  The 25 projects will have a maximum duration of 2 months.

The jury is anonymous and it is composed by four experienced media experts specialising local media from Europe. The jury decides independently about the granting of the submitted project proposals, based on the grant rules, the assessment criteria, and the available budget.

For the first round of applications for the Microgrants for Small Newsrooms, Journalismfund Europe received 54 applications from 22 different EU and eligible countries. In total 54 legal entities applied, they are registered/domiciled in Albania, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Czechia, Estonia, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands, North Macedonia, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain and Ukraine. The jury had to make some tough choices to choose the best projects to be supported.

The next deadline is Thursday 3rd of April 2025 at 1 PM CEST. If you have more questions regarding the fund, book your pre-application session here to increase your chances of getting the grant.

The PluPro project is a 24-month project co-funded by the European Union, Vereniging Veronica and Limelight Foundations and implemented by the consortium of Journalismfund Europe and Transitions.
